The work of ARM Building’s environmental specialist, Tim Miller, has received national recognition.

Tim scooped the 2024 NPA Chris Brant Award “in recognition of the great work he has been doing on farrowing systems over the past year or so”. He was presented with the award by NPA chairman Rob Mutimer at the National Pig Awards held in London on 19th November.

“Tim deserves to be recognised for the value he has added to the pig sector, and I’m sure he will be a popular choice by many,” said Mr Mutimer.

“He is well known and beloved throughout the sector for his unbounded knowledge and expertise on ventilation, buildings, equipment and farrowing systems.

“But what many don’t realise is the time and effort he dedicates to the sector, whether that is via various groups, committees and meetings or the support he regularly and unquestioningly provides to organisations like NPA, quietly and behind the scenes.”

Mr Mutimer singled out Tim’s recent contribution regarding flexible farrowing systems and his assistance to veterinary surgeon John Mackinnon in engaging with producers to facilitate visits to their pig units. This helped Mr Mackinnon to produce a critical review that would undoubtedly help the sector design its future direction.

In addition, Tim’s consistent and ongoing guidance and advice provided to the Buildings Suppliers Forum, Red Tractor, AHDB “could not be underestimated and is a testament to his willingness to go above and beyond”.

Tim subsequently commented:

"I was both surprised and delighted to receive this award.  In relation to the work on flexible farrowing, I would like to thank all the farmers who took the time and trouble to share their experiences so that I could compare different systems. As far as ventilation and the environment around the pig are concerned, there have been huge advances in technology which enabled farmers to improve the environment for pigs and also make significant savings in energy use and costs, and I have been pleased to be involved with that.”

  • The Chris Brant Award, named after the legendary pig farmer who died in 2019, recognises those who have ‘gone the extra mile’ for the industry over the past 12 months.
